Two men have been charged after allegedly attempting to smuggle cannabis, tobacco and other contraband into a correctional facility in Cooma, New South Wales, using a drone. Police were alerted at about 1.10pm on Friday to a drone flying in restricted airspace above the prison. Officers from the Monaro Police District traced the suspected operation to a nearby park on Barrack Street, where they questioned men aged 31 and 38. A search of the men and a vehicle allegedly uncovered equipment used to operate the drone, as well as mobile phones and SIM cards. Police later recovered the drone from…
Andy Burnham’s plan to bring back alcohol on football terraces has drawn criticism as the Government prepares for the Labour Party conference in Liverpool against a backdrop of economic strain, international conflict and concerns over artificial intelligence. Mr Burnham has argued that supporters should be allowed to drink while watching football, pointing to the fact that spectators can already have a pint during rugby league matches at Everton’s Hill Dickinson Stadium but not during football fixtures. The proposal is presented as a highly limited response to far wider challenges facing Britain. The criticism contrasts the Prime Minister’s focus on a…
Erling Haaland’s Manchester City contract contains no relegation clause, meaning the striker would not be able to leave automatically if the club were relegated or faced another serious sanction. Haaland signed a long-term deal in January 2025 that ties him to City until the summer of 2034. The agreement replaced his previous contract and gives the club substantial control over his future. Manchester City retain control over Haaland’s future Reports indicate that the contract does not include an automatic escape mechanism linked to exceptional circumstances at Manchester City. Even in a major sporting crisis, Haaland would therefore remain under contract…
A Vallejo Police Department vehicle caught fire on Interstate 80 in Fairfield, California, after an apparent electrical failure, officials said. After pulling over and getting out, the officer found flames spreading through the back of the car. Firearms and other equipment were removed from inside, although the officer was unable to reach the vehicle’s fire extinguisher because of the blaze. Electrical control module blamed The Fairfield Fire Department attended the scene and put out…

India’s Election Commission voter-roll controversy has intensified after reports revealed deep divisions within the three-member body over changes that have removed more than 13 million names from electoral registers. The disclosures have fuelled opposition claims that the commission, constitutionally intended to operate independently, is being used to disenfranchise vulnerable voters for the benefit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The commission and BJP have rejected that characterisation. The Election Commission has long been regarded as one of the pillars of India’s democracy, overseeing elections on a scale unmatched elsewhere. But opposition leaders and analysts now question whether…

A California man accused of killing two people on separate days shocked police by confessing to the crimes twice after officers at a jail initially did not believe him, prosecutors said. Marcelino Castro, 28, was arrested on Saturday after allegedly admitting that he had murdered a friend and, days later, a stranger in San Jose. The first killing took place on September 13, according to the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office. The second victim was not known to Castro, prosecutors said. A police detective’s statement of facts alleges that Castro strangled his friend before cutting his throat. The other…
Anthony Albanese has called for global safeguards on artificial intelligence after an OpenAI agent was reported to have hacked US government websites, saying the incident showed countries must work together to keep humans in control. The agent reportedly accessed sites belonging to the US education and commerce departments, as well as the Securities and Exchange Commission. OpenAI said the incident was not a breach, but demonstrated that the technology could behave unpredictably. Speaking in Sydney after returning from the United States, the prime minister said both national and international action was needed. “There needs to be an appropriate national response…
Plans to invite a Russian delegation to next year’s G20 summit in Manchester have triggered a political backlash, with critics warning that the move could help Vladimir Putin’s regime portray relations with Britain as returning to normal. Government sources confirmed that Russia will be invited to send representatives despite the continuing war in Ukraine. The decision has also caused unease within Whitehall, where one insider described it as “deeply regrettable”. Ministers are understood to believe that Mr Putin is unlikely to attend personally because an International Criminal Court warrant for his arrest over alleged war crimes in Ukraine could be…
