Real Madrid interest in Riccardo Calafiori is unlikely to lead to an easy deal, with Arsenal understood to value the Italy international at more than €100 million.
The Spanish club have made enquiries through people close to the 24-year-old defender, but no formal offer has been made. Arsenal remain firmly opposed to selling him cheaply and regard him as an important part of Mikel Arteta’s plans.
Calafiori joined Arsenal from Bologna in 2024 and has continued to develop into one of Europe’s most versatile defenders. His contract at the Emirates runs until June 2029, while there is no indication that he is seeking a move away.
Arsenal set high asking price for Riccardo Calafiori
Sources close to the agents industry have indicated that Arsenal would only consider opening negotiations if Madrid submitted an offer above €100 million.
That valuation reflects Calafiori’s growing importance to the side. He can play at centre-back or left-back and is also comfortable carrying the ball forward and moving into midfield when Arsenal have possession.
His estimated market value has risen to about €65 million as his performances in England have improved, but Arsenal’s internal valuation is considerably higher because of his long-term contract and role in Arteta’s project.
Arteta identified those qualities when Calafiori arrived, describing him as “a big personality and character, with specific skills which will make us stronger”. The defender has since become increasingly influential and has also added goals to his game this season.
Real Madrid’s interest is therefore understandable, given Calafiori’s flexibility and ability to contribute in several areas of the pitch. However, Arsenal’s position means the Spanish club may have to make an exceptional offer before any serious negotiations begin.
For now, Madrid’s interest remains exploratory rather than an imminent transfer, with Calafiori continuing to be viewed by Arsenal as more valuable on the pitch than as a potential sale.
