Estevao Willian has been urged to leave Chelsea on loan in January after struggling to secure regular first-team football under Xabi Alonso.
The Brazilian has made four Premier League appearances this season but has not started a match, with his opportunities limited to 23 minutes of league action. Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers, Pedro Neto and other attacking options remain ahead of him in the Chelsea pecking order.
Estevao was named among the substitutes for Saturday’s 2-0 victory at Everton but was not brought on, further raising questions over whether a temporary move would now benefit his development.
Scott Sinclair backs loan move for Estevao
Former Chelsea winger Scott Sinclair believes the 19-year-old needs to prioritise regular football rather than remain on the fringes of Alonso’s squad.
“As a young player, all you want to do is play football,” Sinclair said.
“In my experience, having been on loan six times during my spell at Chelsea, you just want to be playing for your parent club.
“But when you aren’t, you have to go out on loan to gain experience and game time.
“The longer you go without playing, the less match-fit you become, which makes it even harder to get into the side when an opportunity arises and that leads to doubt.
“Only Estevao can decide what is best for him, but because he is so young, getting consistent game time is essential and having been in the same position, I’d say he should go and play.”
Estevao was expected to build on an impressive debut season in England and remains one of Chelsea’s brightest young attacking prospects. He is also an established Brazil international and is contracted to the club on a long-term basis.
A permanent departure would therefore appear excessive, with the immediate issue being the lack of opportunities available to him at Stamford Bridge rather than any question over his potential.
A carefully considered six-month loan to a club where he could play regularly could give Estevao the match experience he currently lacks and allow him to return to Chelsea as a more complete winger next season.
