At least seven people have been injured after a car struck a crowd of Newcastle Knights fans gathered in Newcastle to farewell the NRL team before Sunday’s Grand Final.
Emergency services were called to the Newcastle Link Road roundabout on Transfield Avenue at about 9.30am on Saturday. More than 10 ambulances and three helicopters were sent to the scene.
NSW Police said several people were injured and receiving treatment, while confirming that the driver had been arrested at the scene.
The fans had gathered to see the Knights team bus leave the city. NSW MP Sonia Hornery said she had been informed of “an incident involving a vehicle colliding with pedestrians on Newcastle Link Rd while knights fans were there to cheer on the team coach”.
Labour MP Dan Repacholi described the incident as a “serious accident”. He said there were reports that a car had been doing a burnout before losing control and hitting dozens of people, including children who he said had been seriously injured.
Newcastle Link Road was closed in both directions as emergency crews worked at the scene. Police urged members of the public to avoid the area, disperse safely and keep the roadways clear.
The incident also forced a change to the planned route for the Newcastle Knights’ Grand Final procession. The team bus was diverted via an alternative route, with the club saying public safety was its priority.
“We apologise to anybody who was waiting and missed the bus, but public safety is our priority,” the Knights said.
The bus has since left Newcastle, but the road closure is expected to remain in place for some time while inquiries continue.
Police acknowledged that many supporters may have missed the chance to see the team and thanked the community for its patience, co-operation and assistance.
