Chelsea are reportedly monitoring Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder Yasin Ayari after talks over a new contract stalled, potentially giving the London club an opportunity to pursue a deal before the January transfer window.
The 23-year-old Sweden international has become an important part of Fabian Hurzeler’s squad, with his energy, technical ability and versatility in central midfield attracting interest from several European clubs.
Chelsea interest in Yasin Ayari grows
Ayari is understood to be valued at about €50 million, although Brighton’s contract position could influence negotiations. His current agreement expires at the end of the season, while the club hold an option to extend it by a further year.
Brighton are keen to keep the midfielder, but discussions over a long-term deal have not yet produced a breakthrough. Activating the additional-year clause would allow the Seagulls to protect his value and strengthen their position should they decide to consider offers.
Chelsea are assessing whether the uncertainty can be used to secure Ayari. His ability to carry the ball forward, create opportunities and perform in different midfield roles would give the club greater tactical flexibility.
Blues sporting director Paul Winstanley also knows Ayari from his previous work at Brighton, a connection that could be useful as Chelsea weigh up their options.
However, Chelsea face competition for the Sweden international. Galatasaray remain interested after previously exploring a possible move, while Fenerbahce, AC Milan and a number of Premier League clubs are also reported to be monitoring the situation.
Brighton have little desire to lose a player who has become significant to Hurzeler’s plans. With his contract unresolved and several clubs watching developments, Ayari’s future is likely to remain under scrutiny ahead of the January window.
