Bruno Fernandes’ future at Manchester United is under fresh scrutiny, with AC Milan reportedly monitoring the midfielder’s position before the January transfer window.
The uncertainty follows a public disagreement over United’s tactical approach and Fernandes’ omission from the starting line-up for Sunday’s 3-0 defeat by Bournemouth. Michael Carrick said the decision was based purely on footballing considerations and was not disciplinary.
AC Milan monitoring Bruno Fernandes transfer situation
AC Milan could consider a move for Fernandes if the 32-year-old becomes available, with the Italian club understood to be keeping a close watch on developments at Old Trafford.
Ruben Amorim is reportedly keen on a reunion with his former United captain. Fernandes, meanwhile, is said to be increasingly unhappy with the direction of events at the club.
Tensions increased after United’s 4-1 Champions League defeat to Como, when Fernandes questioned the team’s approach. He argued that United were not pressing with enough aggression and were allowing opponents too much confidence and space.
Carrick subsequently left Fernandes on the bench against Bournemouth, but insisted the decision was made for footballing reasons. United’s heavy defeat has nevertheless intensified speculation that the relationship between the player and club may be deteriorating.
Fernandes’ contractual position is another factor in the situation. His current agreement is reported to expire next summer, although United have an option to extend it by a further year and have held discussions over a new deal.
A January departure would still represent a significant decision for United. Since Carrick took charge in January, Fernandes has recorded 14 assists and created 96 chances, more than any other player in Europe’s top five leagues during that period.
His importance to the team could make an immediate transfer difficult, but the possibility of an exit cannot be dismissed if Fernandes feels United’s direction no longer matches his ambitions.
AC Milan would offer the midfielder a major European stage and the prospect of working with Amorim again. However, his wages and any transfer fee would remain potential obstacles to a January agreement.
For United, the key issue is whether the current dispute is a temporary consequence of a poor run or the beginning of the end for one of the club’s most influential players of the post-Ferguson era.
