Eddie Howe could demand to bring his entire backroom staff to Old Trafford if Manchester United appoint him as Michael Carrick’s successor, according to reports.
Howe has emerged as a leading candidate after United’s 3-0 defeat by Bournemouth extended their winless run to eight matches. His Premier League experience is understood to appeal to senior figures at the club, but any approach could involve negotiations over more than the manager’s contract.
Eddie Howe’s reported Manchester United staffing demand
Reports suggest Howe would want to retain the coaching structure he has relied upon during his managerial career, including trusted staff from his spells at Newcastle United and Bournemouth.
The former Newcastle manager has placed considerable importance on working with coaches who understand his training methods and tactical approach. Sky Sports has also highlighted the potential demand as speculation over his candidacy grows.
Howe is understood to be the preferred choice of United’s director of football, Jason Wilcox. However, the club’s head of recruitment, Christopher Vivell, is reportedly in favour of Julian Nagelsmann, leaving senior figures to weigh up differing views over the next appointment.
There could also be a financial issue to resolve. United may still be required to pay Newcastle up to £6 million in compensation linked to the terms of Howe’s departure agreement.
Allowing Howe to bring his own staff would represent another significant decision for a club that has repeatedly changed managers while retaining elements of previous coaching regimes.
United may be wary of accepting a large incoming team, but Howe’s work at Newcastle was built around a detailed coaching structure and familiar personnel. Removing that support could undermine one of the main reasons for pursuing his appointment.
The decision therefore extends beyond a choice between Howe and Nagelsmann. United must determine whether they prioritise proven Premier League experience and continuity with Howe, or the greater tactical potential associated with Nagelsmann.
If Howe is selected, the club will also need to decide whether to give him sufficient control over the coaching structure he believes is necessary to implement his methods at Old Trafford.
