Paris Saint-Germain have joined Real Madrid in a growing contest to sign Manchester United academy prospect JJ Gabriel, with the 16-year-old’s future expected to become clearer ahead of the January transfer window.
Gabriel has reportedly decided that he wants to leave Old Trafford in search of a more defined route into senior football. Real Madrid are still considered among the leading contenders, but PSG have now intensified their efforts to secure his signature.
PSG challenge Real Madrid for JJ Gabriel
Reports indicate that the French champions and Real Madrid have moved ahead of Barcelona and Bayern Munich in the race for the highly rated teenager. Both clubs are said to be working towards agreements before January, when Gabriel is expected to become eligible to complete his move.
The interest reflects the reputation Gabriel has built during his time at Manchester United. He was named Premier League Under-18 Player of the Season after an outstanding 2025/26 campaign and has trained regularly with the first team.
United midfielder Bryan Mbeumo has described Gabriel as “something special”, praising his technical ability, confidence in one-versus-one situations and capacity to score impressive goals.
Manchester United face losing a prized academy prospect
The financial compensation involved would be relatively modest because Gabriel is still only 16, but his departure would carry greater significance for United than the immediate fee.
Michael Carrick has publicly called him a “big talent”, while former United manager Ruben Amorim has also spoken positively about his ability. Losing Gabriel would therefore raise questions about the club’s pathway for elite academy players.
No teenager can be guaranteed first-team football, but Real Madrid and PSG can offer significant sporting and financial incentives. For now, Real Madrid are understood to have an advantage, although PSG’s entry means the battle for Gabriel remains unresolved.
