Lamine Yamal won the Men’s Young Player of the Year award at the 2026 Ballon d’Or, but the Barcelona forward said the honour should have gone to team-mate Pau Cubarsí.
Yamal, 19, accepted the recognition before turning attention to the young defender’s performances for Barcelona. Cubarsí has established himself as an important member of the first team despite his age.
“It is an honour to be here and receive this prize,” Yamal said. “I would have liked to see my teammate Cubarsi here because I think this prize should have been for him. He has been playing at an excellent level for some time.”
The Spain international also thanked Barcelona and the national team for their support, while noting that it was his third appearance at the ceremony for the young player award.
“This is my third year up here for this prize. I would like to thank my club and my national team,” Yamal said. “Speaking about this one specifically, this one should have been for Cubarsí.”
Yamal and Cubarsí emerge as Barcelona’s young leaders
Yamal has become one of Barcelona’s leading attacking talents since breaking into the senior side, with his creativity, dribbling and composure also earning him a regular role for Spain.
Cubarsí has made a similar impression in defence. His composure on the ball, defensive awareness and ability to deal with high-pressure situations have made him a valuable option in Barcelona’s backline.
The pair have risen quickly through the club’s ranks and are regarded as important parts of Barcelona’s long-term plans. Yamal’s comments underlined his appreciation of Cubarsí’s sustained level of performance, even as he celebrated another individual award.
