Manchester United’s players are due back at Carrington on Tuesday, although it remains unclear whether Michael Carrick will still be in charge when training resumes.
Carrick was at the club’s training base on Monday to watch the Under-21 side play Hull City in a behind-closed-doors fixture. The first-team squad had been given the day off.
Chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox were also at Carrington, holding discussions about the club’s next steps after Sunday’s 3-0 defeat by Bournemouth.
The decision now rests with the United hierarchy, including Sir Jim Ratcliffe, as pressure grows on Carrick following a run of eight matches without a win in all competitions.
Manchester United consider Carrick’s future
Carrick left captain Bruno Fernandes on the bench against Bournemouth after Fernandes questioned his tactics during the 4-1 Champions League defeat by Como.
United’s latest setback has come during their worst-ever start to a Premier League season. They are 16th in the table with seven points from seven matches, just one point above the relegation zone.
Carrick was appointed in January 2026 after Ruben Amorim was dismissed, initially taking charge until the end of the season. He then led United to 12 victories in 17 matches, securing third place in the Premier League and a return to the Champions League.
He was nominated for the Premier League Manager of the Season award and signed a contract extension in May that runs until 2028.
United are understood to be weighing their options carefully, with Carrick remaining popular among supporters. Any decision over his future could depend on whether the club can identify and agree terms with a replacement before making a change.
