Manchester United are reportedly in talks with Eddie Howe’s representatives in London as uncertainty grows over Michael Carrick’s position at Old Trafford.
The discussions are said to have included the structure of any potential contract, with Howe’s camp preferring an agreement without performance-related clauses while United want provisions linked to Champions League qualification.
The claim was made by transfer insider account Indy Kaila, which reported that Howe’s representatives were meeting club officials. The precise terms under discussion have not been disclosed, and it is unclear whether the contact is at an early stage or represents more advanced negotiations.
Eddie Howe linked with Manchester United position
Howe has emerged as a possible replacement for Carrick should Manchester United decide to make a change. The 48-year-old has been without a managerial role since leaving Newcastle United in the summer, meaning the club would not have to negotiate compensation with another employer.
Reports have suggested Howe would be open to taking charge at Old Trafford. His Premier League experience and reputation for developing players are understood to have made him an attractive candidate.
Manchester United technical director Jason Wilcox has also been linked with an interest in Howe, although there has been no official indication that he is the club’s preferred choice.
Any appointment remains dependent on Carrick’s future and whether the two sides can reach an agreement over contractual terms. Indy Kaila said: “Manchester United insider: Eddie Howe’s representatives are meeting in London with Man United officials. He wants a contract without any clauses. Manchester United want certain UCL clauses placed in the contract.”
Michael Carrick under pressure after Bournemouth defeat
Carrick’s position has come under increased scrutiny after United’s 3-0 home defeat by Bournemouth on Sunday. The result left them 14th in the Premier League and extended their winless run to eight matches in all competitions.
The loss followed a 4-1 Champions League defeat by Como, adding to the pressure on the manager. According to talkSPORT, figures inside the Manchester United dressing room believe Carrick will be dismissed.
Julian Nagelsmann and Antonio Conte have also been mentioned as possible candidates for the job. Carrick remains in charge for now, but the reported contact with Howe’s representatives has intensified speculation over a change at Old Trafford.
