Michael Carrick is reportedly facing the sack at Manchester United after the club’s 3-0 Premier League defeat by Bournemouth at Old Trafford.
The result extended United’s winless run to eight matches in all competitions and left them 14th in the Premier League. The club’s hierarchy could decide on Carrick’s future as early as Monday, although no formal decision had been communicated to him by Sunday evening.
Manchester United dressing room expects Michael Carrick sacking
People inside the Manchester United dressing room are understood to believe that Carrick’s departure is now likely. His position has come under further pressure following a damaging run of results.
Sunday’s loss came only days after United were beaten 4-1 by Como in the Champions League, increasing scrutiny of both the manager and his players.
The situation marks a sharp change in Carrick’s fortunes. The former United midfielder was given a two-year contract during the summer after guiding the club to Champions League qualification.
His agreement is also believed to include a break clause that could allow the hierarchy to end his tenure on more favourable financial terms, should they decide that a change is necessary.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe, chief executive Omar Berrada and technical director Jason Wilcox are understood to be among the senior figures assessing the manager’s future.
Carrick retains support from sections of the club’s fanbase because of his long association with United as a player and coach. Footage after the Bournemouth defeat showed supporters chanting his name while directing their anger towards the squad.
Several managers linked with Manchester United job
If United act against Carrick, Julian Nagelsmann is reportedly among the candidates appreciated by the board. The former Germany and Bayern Munich manager has been linked with the vacancy.
Eddie Howe is also understood to be a potential option, with reports suggesting the former Newcastle manager would be ready to hold talks if Carrick were dismissed.
Antonio Conte has likewise been mentioned. The serial winner recently described his ideal job as one involving the task of awakening a sleeping giant.
For now, Carrick’s future remains unresolved, with Manchester United facing a decision over whether to continue with the manager or bring his tenure to an immediate end.
