Too $hort has made his move into electronic dance music, teaming up with Diplo and Nigerian rapper and singer Kah-Lo on a new track called “Money Calling”.
The collaboration, which is due to feature on Diplo’s upcoming album, was performed live for the first time at the DJ’s Run Club event in San Francisco on Sunday.
Around 20,000 people attended the event, where the veteran rapper introduced the song as part of his developing EDM crossover.
Too $hort has been a long-standing fan of electronic music, while Diplo has spent several years mentoring him as he explored the scene. The pair have also performed together at Stagecoach.
Diplo had reportedly been waiting for the right track to formalise their collaboration, with “Money Calling” providing the opportunity alongside Kah-Lo.
Too $hort said he had built a relationship with Diplo through their live shows before working together in the studio.
“I’ve been rocking with Diplo for a few years now doing some shows and getting to know him and I knew that when he and I actually cooked up some music, we will come up with something crazy and that’s what we got here with Money Calling,” he said.
The rapper is expected to continue experimenting with EDM while retaining his links to hip-hop. He is due to headline the two-day Escape festival in San Bernardino on Halloween, sharing the bill with leading electronic acts.
