Prime Minister Andy Burnham has hinted that he could fight the next election on a pledge to take Britain back into the European Union.
Speaking on ITV’s Good Morning Britain, Mr Burnham said he was “not proposing any changes in this Parliament”, but did not rule out pursuing a different approach at the next election.
His comments came after he opened the door to Britain readopting the EU’s free movement rules over the weekend.
Mr Burnham said the nature of immigration into the UK had been “different” since Brexit, with more foreign nationals moving permanently to Britain rather than returning to their home countries.
Any decision to adopt free movement as government policy would mean Labour front benchers would be expected to support it publicly or risk losing their positions.
