Manchester United are refusing to cancel JJ Gabriel’s academy registration, leaving the highly rated 16-year-old unable to complete an immediate move away from Old Trafford.
Gabriel is understood to want to leave after becoming frustrated by the lack of a clear route into Michael Carrick’s first team. His future has attracted interest from several leading European clubs.
Manchester United reject JJ Gabriel registration request
Football Insider reports that United have rejected Gabriel’s request to end his registration, despite attempts to persuade him to remain at the club.
The teenager had hoped to secure an early departure after becoming concerned about his limited senior opportunities. United formally offered him a scholarship deal, but his exit was already considered increasingly likely.
If Gabriel joins a European club, United may receive only around £350,000 in training compensation.
Barcelona have previously been linked with the youngster, although sporting director Deco publicly denied that the club were pursuing him. More recent reports have suggested that Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain have moved ahead in the race, with both clubs holding discussions over his future.
Gabriel’s situation raises concerns over United’s academy pathway
United are entitled to protect their position after investing years in Gabriel’s development. He is regarded as one of the brightest players to emerge from the academy in recent years and impressed during his time at youth level.
The player reportedly wanted clearer evidence that first-team opportunities were approaching. United maintain that a development plan was already in place, with first-team medical, coaching and performance staff involved in preparing his progression.
No 16-year-old can expect guaranteed senior football, but United must convince their leading young players that patience will ultimately be rewarded.
Should Gabriel leave for minimal compensation and go on to establish himself as an elite player elsewhere, the financial loss would be significant. The greater concern for United would be the prospect of losing a highly regarded academy talent because he no longer believes Old Trafford offers the clearest path to first-team football.
