Real Madrid secured a 2-1 Clasico victory over Barcelona as Kylian Mbappe struck twice, including a late winner, to move within three points of their rivals at the top of LaLiga.
Mbappe’s decisive goal arrived in the 87th minute, when he finished Eduardo Camavinga’s cutback after Jude Bellingham had produced a skilful piece of play. Real Madrid’s celebrations spilled on to the pitch, with Jose Mourinho sliding on his knees and members of his staff joining the players.
Barcelona had looked the more threatening side after Raphinha restored parity, with Lamine Yamal also going close as the hosts pushed for a winner. Instead, Real Madrid held on for their first victory in Barcelona in three years.
The result capped a difficult week for Hansi Flick’s team, whose 11-match winning start to the season had been ended by defeat to Paris St-Germain in the Champions League. Atletico Madrid are now second, two points behind Barcelona.
Mbappe puts Real Madrid ahead
Real Madrid had competed confidently in an open first half, with Arda Guler forcing a save and Mbappe shooting over after a move involving Bellingham and Guler.
The visitors took the lead in the 41st minute through an unusual finish. Gerard Martin’s attempted clearance struck Mbappe and flew into the net, although Real Madrid’s build-up to the incident had been excellent.
Barcelona responded after the interval. Raphinha first sent an effort over the bar before testing the visitors again, and he eventually equalised in the 61st minute when he met Pedri’s reverse pass with a snapshot that Andriy Lunin touched but could not keep out.
There was controversy before the goal when Joao Cancelo appeared to put his studs into Yan Diomande’s calf. The Real Madrid winger continued his attack before going down, but no retrospective punishment was given to the Barcelona defender.
Lunin then made a vital intervention, clawing away Martin’s powerful header from a corner, while Yamal clipped a shot narrowly wide after escaping several challenges.
Real Madrid ultimately produced the late breakthrough. Bellingham’s skill created the opening for Camavinga, whose cutback was swept home by Mbappe to settle a pulsating contest at Spotify Camp Nou.
