Crystal Palace have been urged to make signing a new centre-back their priority in January, as pressure continues to build on manager Pierre Sage at Selhurst Park.
Former Everton chief executive Keith Wyness believes defensive reinforcements could be vital to Palace’s hopes of recovering from a poor start to the season and improving Sage’s position.
Crystal Palace need defensive reinforcements
Palace have conceded 17 goals in their opening seven Premier League matches, with a 5-0 defeat by Brighton adding to concerns over their defensive organisation.
Wyness believes the problems cannot be placed entirely at Sage’s door after the club sold Maxence Lacroix and Daniel Munoz during the summer. Their departures have left the manager with fewer established options at the back.
A new centre-back could therefore provide greater stability and give Sage a better opportunity to change the team’s fortunes. Wyness has also called for a more pragmatic approach, with defensive solidity taking priority while Palace attempt to regain form.
Sage must nevertheless improve results before the January transfer window opens. His ability to adjust his tactics and organise the defence with the players currently available could prove decisive in determining whether he retains the confidence of the club’s hierarchy.
Former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown has suggested that Sean Dyche could be considered if Palace decide to dismiss Sage. Dyche is known for his disciplined defensive approach.
Palace have so far continued to back Sage, but further disappointing results would increase the pressure on the Frenchman. A quality centre-back in January may offer an important boost, although the manager is likely to need an immediate improvement before then to secure his position.
