Chicago’s Lake Street Bridge replacement has been delayed by two days, meaning some Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) passengers will face altered rail services until 4am on Wednesday, October 28.
The Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) said crews need additional time to complete structural, electrical and mechanical alignment work linking the existing bridge structure with its replacement leaf. Unanticipated alignment issues have pushed back the planned completion date from Monday, October 26. Lake Street Bridge work delays CTA services
Normal CTA rail operations are expected to resume across all lines once final alignment checks, systems testing and test train runs have been completed by CDOT and CTA staff.
The project involves replacing the bridge’s west leaf, alongside work to reconstruct sections of the CTA railway, including rails, ties, guard systems, walkways and associated equipment. Brown, Orange and Purple Line trains are due to return to normal service and resume using the Loop Elevated tracks from 4am on Monday, October 26, after CTA completed track and interlocking maintenance at Tower 18.
However, Green and Pink Line passengers will continue to be affected while the Lake Street Bridge work continues.
Green Line trains will run in two separate sections: between Harlem/Lake and Clinton, and between Clark/Lake and the South Side terminals. Free shuttle buses will operate between Clinton and Clark/Lake stations.
Pink Line trains will run between 54th/Cermak and the Racine Blue Line station. Passengers travelling towards downtown can transfer there to Blue Line services, while Pink Line trains will remain unable to operate around the Loop Elevated structure. CTA has advised passengers to allow extra time and check its service alerts before travelling, as the temporary arrangements will remain in place until the bridge project is completed.
