Manchester United are preparing to revive their interest in Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite as they consider a significant overhaul of their back line, according to reports.
The 24-year-old centre-back has been monitored by United for more than two years. Everton rejected offers of £35 million and £45 million for him in 2024, while subsequent injury problems disrupted the pursuit.
Branthwaite’s return to fitness and impressive start to the 2026/27 season have now put him back among United’s leading defensive targets.
Manchester United target Branthwaite valued at around £80m
Everton are in a strong negotiating position after Branthwaite signed a new contract last year that runs until 2030. Reports suggest the club could demand about £80 million for the England international.
United have also made fresh contact with the defender’s representatives this season. Manchester City, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid have been linked with the player as well.
Everton manager David Moyes has praised Branthwaite’s displays this season, including his performance against Tottenham.
“Jarrad was excellent,” Moyes said after the match. He also described the defender as “a really good player” with “far more to come”.
Branthwaite’s profile would address several of the concerns facing United’s defence. He is left-footed, physically imposing, quick across the ground and comfortable defending in space.
His age also makes him a potential long-term addition rather than a short-term solution. However, United would need to be satisfied that his previous hamstring problems are behind him before committing to a fee close to £80 million.
His performances since returning have been encouraging, and he has re-entered the England picture. United are seeking greater authority and athleticism at centre-back, particularly if Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martínez are no longer considered long-term answers.
