A mother accused of murdering her two-year-old son is due to appear in court in Illinois as her defence team continues to question whether she is receiving adequate psychiatric treatment in custody.
Corie A. Walsh, 38, faces three counts of first-degree murder over the death of Barrett Walsh in Frankfort, Will County. She is scheduled to appear at 9.30am on Monday, having pleaded not guilty at a hearing in September. The hearing is expected to focus partly on Walsh’s mental health. Her lawyer, Andrea Lyon, has requested records from the Will County Jail to establish whether her client is receiving psychiatric care and taking prescribed medication at the correct times.
“These medications have to be given on a schedule,” Ms Lyon said. “We just want to see that and have an expert probably look at it and help us figure out if there’s something that we need to do to make her as safe as we can.”
She added that she was concerned Walsh was not receiving appropriate treatment and said the defence wanted to have her transferred to a hospital if possible.
The allegations against Corie Walsh
Frankfort police were called to the family home in the 22700 block of Brook Stone Court shortly after 4pm on 1 September following a report of an injured child.
Prosecutors allege that a neighbour found Barrett hanging in the basement from a device attached to a rafter. The neighbour removed the ligature, lowered the boy to the floor and performed CPR while calling emergency services.
Barrett was taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Prosecutors say a preliminary post-mortem examination found that he died from asphyxia caused by compression of the neck.
The same neighbour is said to have found Walsh in an upstairs bath with cuts to her wrists and thighs. Police described her injuries as non-life-threatening and said she appeared to be attempting to harm herself.
An infant was also in the house but was not injured, while two school-aged children returned home around the time of the discovery and were not physically hurt, according to court records.
Prosecutors allege Walsh intended to kill Barrett, or knew there was a strong probability that her actions would cause his death. They also say she told officers that she had killed him because he was the “devil” and the “anti-Christ”.
Investigators claim Walsh later made further statements in hospital about the death which were consistent with the evidence. The case is being investigated by Frankfort Police and the Will-Grundy Major Crimes Task Force.
References to the Lindsay Clancy case
Prosecutors have also drawn attention to Walsh’s reported interest in the Massachusetts murder trial of Lindsay Clancy, who was accused of killing her three children.
They allege Walsh discussed the case with friends in a group message hours before Barrett was found. The defence has argued that the timing was coincidental and has challenged the suggestion that the trial was connected to the allegations against Walsh.
Walsh remains in custody while the case proceeds. Her husband and mother attended her previous hearing in support of her.
