Arsenal are considering a fresh January approach for Atlético Madrid forward Julián Álvarez, with the Argentina international again understood to be a major target for Mikel Arteta’s side.
The Gunners remain interested in adding an elite forward despite strengthening their attack in recent transfer windows. Barcelona also retain an interest in Álvarez, but Atlético have shown no willingness to make negotiations straightforward.
Arsenal maintain interest in Julián Álvarez
Arsenal’s pursuit is not a new development. Initial discussions reportedly took place at ownership level earlier this year, while sporting director Andrea Berta’s connections with Atlético have helped keep communication between the clubs open.
Arsenal are described as “very interested” and could submit a proposal in January if circumstances become more favourable. The club continue to monitor the striker closely.
Barcelona remain a complicating factor. Joan Laporta publicly confirmed the Catalan club’s strong interest during the summer, although Atlético repeatedly refused to negotiate with their La Liga rivals.
Álvarez has also previously shown a preference for Barcelona. Atlético’s position could therefore prove decisive, particularly given the financial demands attached to any potential transfer.
The Madrid club were seeking between €140 million and €150 million during the summer and remain in a strong contractual position. A January deal could require a structure involving add-ons, instalments or player sales.
Why Álvarez fits Arteta’s Arsenal plans
Álvarez would offer Arsenal flexibility in attack. He can lead the line as a No. 9 or operate as a second striker, while his aggressive pressing and ability to combine in tight areas suit Arteta’s approach.
His previous Premier League experience with Manchester City would also reduce the adjustment required should he return to England.
Atlético manager Diego Simeone made clear how highly he regards the forward in July, saying: “Julián is the best footballer we have at Atlético Madrid.”
Arsenal could offer Álvarez financial certainty and a side already built to challenge for major trophies. If Atlético soften their stance and the player becomes available, the Gunners are expected to be among the leading contenders.
