Chris Brown has avoided immediate jail after pleading guilty to affray over a fight at a UK club, receiving an eight-month prison sentence suspended for a year. The decision has prompted debate over whether the singer was dealt with too leniently.
Brown admitted striking Abraham Diaw with a tequila bottle. His co-defendant, Omololu Akinlolu, also avoided an immediate custodial sentence.
Affray is a criminal offence involving a fight or threat of violence by two or more people that disturbs the public peace. Brown’s sentence was handed down at Southwark Crown Court.
The case was discussed on The Low Down, a new YouTube programme produced by TMZ and the New York Post, where contributors examined the sentence and Brown’s previous behaviour.
Some argued that the suspended sentence did not adequately reflect what happened or Brown’s “checkered past”. Others focused on what led to the confrontation, including comments allegedly made to Brown by his former friend, Abraham Diaw.
The discussion also considered Brown’s mental health. He was diagnosed with bipolar depression and post-traumatic stress disorder more than a decade ago.
Contributors questioned whether repeated misconduct should continue to be attributed to mental illness, or whether the singer should be held responsible for his actions independently of that diagnosis.
