Manchester United are monitoring FC Twente defender Ruud Nijstad as they consider adding one of Dutch football’s most promising young players to their defence. Chelsea and several other Premier League clubs are also understood to be tracking the 18-year-old.
Nijstad has attracted attention since breaking into Twente’s senior side. The 6ft 5in centre-back is left-footed, strong in the air and composed in possession, qualities that have made him an appealing prospect for clubs seeking to develop young defensive talent.
United’s interest fits their focus on identifying players who could grow into important first-team options. The club have followed Nijstad’s performances throughout the season, but face significant competition for his signature.
Manchester City, Aston Villa, Newcastle United, Brentford, Everton and Sunderland are also reported to have monitored the defender’s progress, alongside Chelsea.
Manchester United face battle for Ruud Nijstad
A move in January could prove difficult. Twente are reluctant to lose Nijstad during the winter transfer window and would prefer to continue overseeing his development in the Netherlands.
Former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag, now Twente’s technical director, could also have a role in determining the defender’s future.
The Dutch club expects interest to increase in 2027, potentially forcing United to wait until the summer before making a move. With a number of Premier League rivals involved, securing Nijstad is unlikely to be straightforward.
