Tottenham Hotspur are assessing a move for Cruzeiro goalkeeper Otavio, with scouts reportedly monitoring the 20-year-old as the club considers its long-term options between the posts.
The Brazilian has attracted interest from several European sides after establishing himself as Cruzeiro’s first-choice goalkeeper. Nottingham Forest, Napoli, Porto and Borussia Dortmund are also understood to be tracking his progress.
Tottenham face competition for Cruzeiro goalkeeper Otavio
Otavio’s opportunity came after experienced goalkeeper Cassio suffered an injury, but his performances in domestic and continental competition have since strengthened his reputation.
His reflexes, distribution and composure under pressure have reportedly impressed scouts. He has also received a senior Brazil call-up and made his international debut against Australia.
Tottenham are understood to view Otavio as a potential long-term investment, particularly given his ability to contribute to build-up play as well as make important saves.
Forest previously monitored the goalkeeper after failing to agree a deal during the summer. Napoli, Porto and Borussia Dortmund have continued to follow his development, increasing the competition for his signature.
Otavio’s contract strengthens Cruzeiro’s position
Any negotiations are likely to prove difficult for Tottenham after Cruzeiro extended Otavio’s contract until 2031 in August.
The new agreement reportedly contains a €100 million release clause for foreign clubs, worth approximately £84 million. Cruzeiro are nevertheless said to be willing to discuss an initial fee of between €25 million and €30 million.
That valuation means Tottenham will need to decide whether Otavio represents the right investment before making a formal approach. Cruzeiro are under no immediate pressure to sell, although growing interest from Europe could accelerate developments in the coming months.
For now, Tottenham’s interest remains at the scouting stage and any potential transfer will depend on Cruzeiro’s demands and Spurs’ wider plans for their goalkeeping department.
