Liverpool are considering a move for Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite as they plan for the long-term future of their defence, with a potential transfer in 2027 reportedly under consideration.
The 24-year-old has made an impressive start to the season and has pushed his way back into the England picture. His progress has also drawn attention from Manchester United, who remain interested after having two bids rejected in 2024.
Liverpool interest in Jarrad Branthwaite
Football Insider reports that Liverpool admire Branthwaite and have been monitoring his performances while assessing left-footed centre-backs who could eventually succeed Virgil van Dijk.
Van Dijk remains a central figure in Liverpool’s back line, but the club are increasingly conscious that he cannot occupy that role indefinitely. Branthwaite’s age, Premier League experience and ability to operate on the left side make him a strong fit for the profile being considered.
Everton are in a powerful negotiating position. Branthwaite signed a contract running until 2030 and is valued by the club at around £80 million.
That figure could rise further given the rivalry between the two Merseyside clubs. Everton are understood to be reluctant to sell directly to Liverpool and are determined not to sanction a departure unless an exceptional offer is made.
Branthwaite’s physical presence and comfort defending large areas would suit a Liverpool side seeking to maintain a high defensive line. His established Premier League experience could also limit the adaptation risk involved in signing a younger or less familiar alternative.
Liverpool could consider other defenders, including Nico Schlotterbeck, Alessandro Bastoni and Murillo, but Branthwaite is viewed as a player capable of assuming significant responsibility immediately.
A deal would be costly and difficult to negotiate, particularly with Manchester United also pursuing the defender. Liverpool must therefore decide whether Branthwaite’s Premier League experience and long-term potential justify testing Everton’s resolve.
