Costco has begun selling a Jimothy the raccoon plush toy for $10.99 at warehouses across the Pacific Northwest, giving fans of Seattle’s viral animal a new way to take home a piece of local internet folklore. The product is marketed as a dog toy, a detail that has divided some admirers.
The soft toy depicts the unusually compact, short-spined raccoon first spotted in Seattle’s Ballard neighbourhood during the summer. Jimothy quickly became an online sensation, inspiring merchandise, artwork and appearances linked to the city’s sporting culture.
Some social media users questioned why the stuffed animal had been designed for dogs rather than people, with commenters objecting to the idea of a beloved local animal being made into something intended to be chewed. Others said buyers could use it however they wished.
The toy was produced by Think Dog by Delca and has initially been made available only at Costco warehouses in the Pacific Northwest. A listing on the company’s announcement said it would be coming to Costco.com “in just a few weeks”. Jimothy’s popularity has extended well beyond social media. In July, the Seattle Mariners featured a raccoon mascot inspired by him in their traditional salmon race at T-Mobile Park, where the character crossed the finish line first.
