J.R. Smith has been placed under an emergency protective order preventing him from contacting a woman he allegedly injured during an altercation in Texas.
The order, signed on September 29, requires the former NBA star to stay at least 1,000 feet away from the woman’s home and workplace. It remains in force until December 29.
Smith, 41, has also been ordered not to possess firearms or ammunition. The alleged victim has not been identified, but is described as either a member of Smith’s household or someone he was dating.
The case relates to an alleged incident in mid-September. A criminal complaint accuses Smith of “intentionally, knowingly, or recklessly” injuring the woman by hitting, grabbing or pushing her with his hand.
A warrant was issued and Smith was arrested on September 28 in Royse City, Texas, after a police licence plate reader flagged his vehicle. He was booked into county jail on one count of assault causing bodily injury/family violence.
Smith spent one night in jail before posting a 5,000-dollar bond. He has not publicly addressed the allegations, although his lawyer said he was eager to resolve the matter.
