Elizabeth Holmes has not watched the documentary about her life, its film-makers have revealed at a screening in Los Angeles. The Theranos founder is the subject of You Can See Everything, made by Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim.
Neither Holmes nor her longtime partner, Billy Evans, has seen the finished film, the directors said during a question-and-answer session on Tuesday evening.
“Neither of them have seen the film,” Oppenheim said. “Elizabeth is still incarcerated; Billy hasn’t seen it.”
Fielder said the filmmakers’ relationship with Evans became difficult after he “started trying to exert a level of control over the process”.
“It was uncomfortable for us and A24,” he said, adding that communication had subsequently broken down.
“We sort of had to stop. Communication broke down basically, and we’ve been in that state for a little bit,” Fielder said. “So it’s been challenging in that way.”
The documentary follows Holmes, Evans and their family during the 34 days before Holmes reported to prison in May 2023. What began as a film about that period developed into a three-year project, according to A24.
Fielder also said he was still trying to understand why Holmes had allowed the filmmakers access to herself and her family shortly before her imprisonment.
“Even with no cameras — I like to see myself as like a nice person overall, but still, I wouldn’t choose me,” he said, while acknowledging that there was never “a great explanation” for her decision.
“I still am not sure to this day what I experienced,” Fielder added. He said he hoped audiences watching the documentary might help him make sense of the experience.
When is Elizabeth Holmes’ documentary released?
You Can See Everything is due to open in cinemas on October 16.
Holmes became internationally known through the scandal surrounding Theranos, which claimed its technology could carry out a wide range of blood tests using only a small amount of blood. The company’s technology and business claims were later found to be misleading, and Holmes was convicted of defrauding investors in 2022.
Her projected full release date from prison is February 22, 2030, while she is scheduled to transfer to a halfway house on August 23, 2027.
