England were beaten 3-2 by Spain at Wembley in a thrilling Nations League contest, despite taking a 2-1 lead into half-time. Spain regained control after the interval, leaving England to reflect on a disappointing second half.
England’s difficulties began when Marc Guehi’s mistake allowed Lamine Yamal to put Spain ahead. The hosts recovered to move in front before the break, but were unable to contain Spain’s attacking play in the second period.
England player ratings against Spain
James Trafford was given a 5.5. The goalkeeper made several good saves on a rare start ahead of Jordan Pickford, although conceding three goals made it an underwhelming opportunity despite the fact that he was not necessarily at fault for them.
Guehi received a five after his error contributed to Spain’s opener. He recovered to some extent as the match progressed, but the early mistake left England on the back foot and proved costly.
Ezri Konsa was rated six. He was slightly more assured, although England’s defence faced a difficult evening against Spain’s slick attacking moves.
Jarrell Quansah also scored 5.5. Used at right-back rather than in his more natural position, he struggled to make a decisive impact, with Trent Alexander-Arnold left out of the starting line-up.
Nico O’Reilly earned a 5.5 after providing the assist for Harry Kane’s goal. However, he was also responsible for a mistake and was unable to offer the consistency England needed.
Elliot Anderson was given 6.5 for a hard-working display. He performed his role reasonably well, though the task of facing Rodri and Spain’s midfield was a demanding one.
Myles Lewis-Skelly, returning to the England side, also received 6.5. The Arsenal youngster showed promise as a midfield option after making a similar positional switch at club level.
Jude Bellingham was among England’s stronger performers, earning a 7.5. He registered an assist and continued looking for ways to influence the match when several of his team-mates struggled to make an impact.
Bukayo Saka was rated six after a quiet outing. He recorded no successful dribbles and his attempts on goal failed to trouble Spain sufficiently.
Anthony Gordon scored England’s other goal and was awarded 7.5. His finish was well taken and he remained a lively presence throughout the contest.
Kane received a seven after adding another goal to his collection. The finish was scrappy, while his penalty miss followed an unfortunate slip.
England’s substitutes were given broadly similar marks, with Jarrad Branthwaite, Morgan Gibbs-White, Dominic Calvert-Lewin and James Garner each rated six.
