Kieran McKenna’s appearance in the Old Trafford directors’ box has added to the pressure on Michael Carrick after Manchester United’s damaging 3-2 defeat by Brighton in the Carabao Cup.
United surrendered a two-goal lead on Wednesday night, with Shea Lacey and Mason Mount scoring inside the opening 10 minutes before Brighton completed the comeback. The result was the club’s third defeat in six matches in all competitions.
McKenna is currently without a managerial position and has attended several Premier League grounds during the opening weeks of the season. However, his presence at Old Trafford has inevitably prompted discussion because of his previous links with United.
McKenna’s presence increases scrutiny on Carrick
The 40-year-old worked on United’s coaching staff under Jose Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick. He also built his reputation during an impressive spell as Ipswich manager.
His appearance does not indicate that United are preparing to replace Carrick, but the timing is uncomfortable for the current manager. Carrick enjoyed strong backing last season after winning 12 of his 17 matches and guiding the club to third place.
This campaign has proved far more difficult. United have taken only four points from their opening four Premier League matches and are already out of the Carabao Cup.
The defeat by Brighton also marked an unwanted landmark. United had previously won 143 of the 145 matches at Old Trafford in which they had led by two goals, while this was their first home defeat from such a position in 50 years.
McKenna would be an obvious name to consider if INEOS eventually decided to make a change, given his knowledge of the club and experience with several United players. His attendance alone, however, does not make him a candidate to take over.
Carrick now faces an important test when United travel to Fulham on Sunday. Victory could ease the pressure before the international break, while another defeat would intensify the speculation surrounding his position.
