Flash floods in Syria have killed at least five people, including four children, after heavy rain swept across northern and eastern parts of the country, the Ministry of Emergency and Disaster Management said.
The children drowned in separate incidents in Raqqa and Deir Az Zor governorates. A man died when floodwater caught his car near al-Salmani Bridge in the western Raqqa countryside.
Five people, including two children, remain missing as emergency services respond to the storms.
Flooding damages bridges and roads
Flooding has damaged infrastructure and disrupted bridges in Aleppo, Raqqa, Deir Az Zor, Hasakah and Homs, according to the ministry.
State news agency SANA reported that al-Salmani Bridge, west of Tabqa, had collapsed, closing the road connecting Raqqa and Aleppo.
Emergency teams rescued 15 civilians whose vehicles had been trapped by floodwater. About 375 families were evacuated from three camps on the rural outskirts of Raqqa.
Thursday was the second day on which the ministry recorded responses to flooding across Syria, with further situation updates issued on its X account.
The country has also experienced flooding earlier this year. UNICEF said in June that 17,000 people had been affected, including about 2,000 children among 700 displaced families, while 49 water treatment plants in Deir Az Zor and Raqqa had stopped operating.
