Tottenham forward Mathys Tel has assembled a six-person support team to aid his development and maintain his fitness while he continues to seek regular first-team opportunities.
The 21-year-old Frenchman is working with individual attacking and defensive coaches, a video analyst, a fitness coach, a personal chef and a nutritionist outside Tottenham’s usual training programme.
Mathys Tel’s six-person support team
One of the coaches focuses on attacking movement, finishing and Tel’s effectiveness in the final third. The other works on his defensive positioning and work rate.
A video analyst studies match footage with the forward, helping to identify areas for improvement in his tactical understanding and decision-making.
Tel also has a personal fitness coach overseeing additional conditioning work, while a chef and nutritionist manage his diet and recovery.
The arrangement reflects the lengths Tel is taking to remain prepared for opportunities under Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi. His involvement has been limited despite arriving in north London with significant expectations after emerging as one of Bayern Munich’s most promising young attacking players.
Competition for places has made consistent playing time difficult to secure, but Tel’s decision to work separately on both attacking and defensive aspects of his game indicates a desire to develop into a more complete forward.
Tel’s Chelsea goal highlights his potential
His efforts away from the club’s scheduled sessions have come into focus after a memorable contribution in Tottenham’s recent 2-0 Premier League win over Chelsea.
With Spurs leading 1-0 at Stamford Bridge, Tel collected the ball deep inside his own half and drove towards goal, carrying it past retreating defenders before finishing in the 87th minute.
The goal secured Tottenham’s first Premier League victory at Stamford Bridge since April 2018 and provided a reminder of the attacking ability the forward can offer as he continues to work for a greater role.
