A Trump rally attendee in Rock Hill, South Carolina, compared the gathering to the Jonestown massacre when asked by Fox News why he had come to see President Donald Trump.
Reporter Lucas Tomlinson was speaking to a man named Tom ahead of Thursday’s rally when he asked what had brought him there. The man replied that he wanted to see a “cult” in person.
“Well, in the late ’70s, I was a little too young to get involved and go to South America for the Jonestown Massacre, but this is as close as I’ll ever get,” he said.
Tomlinson appeared stunned and repeated: “Wait, the Jonestown Massacre?”
“That’s right. It’s nothing like seeing a cult right up front, man,” Tom replied.
The 1978 Jonestown Massacre saw more than 900 people die in Guyana under cult leader Jim Jones.
Tomlinson then suggested the man might not be a Trump supporter and moved on to speak to someone else. The attendee was wearing a bright yellow shirt displaying the word “DEATH”.
Trump was in South Carolina to rally support for Republican Senator Darline Graham, who is facing Democrat Annie Andrews in a tight race ahead of Tuesday’s midterm elections.
