Manchester United have received a positive Kobbie Mainoo injury update, with manager Michael Carrick confirming that the midfielder has resumed some training ahead of Saturday’s Premier League meeting with Chelsea.
Mainoo has missed United’s last four matches with a muscular injury, but was back around the first-team group at Carrington this week as he works towards a return.
“Good news, Kobbie done a little bit of training yesterday, so he’s back in and around the group, so that’s obviously a positive,” Carrick told reporters before the trip to Stamford Bridge.
Kobbie Mainoo return offers boost to Manchester United
The 21-year-old’s return to training does not guarantee that he will be involved against Chelsea. Having only recently resumed work with the squad, Mainoo is likely to undergo further assessment before Carrick decides whether he is ready for the matchday squad.
Nevertheless, his progress is welcome news for a United side dealing with injuries and a difficult run of results. The club are without a win in their last eight matches in all competitions, while a 3-0 home defeat by Bournemouth left them 14th in the Premier League.
Mainoo’s composure in possession and ability to control the midfield could give Carrick an additional option as he looks to improve United’s performances at Stamford Bridge.
The England international became an important part of Carrick’s plans during the manager’s interim spell last season, helping United secure Champions League qualification. His return to the group is therefore another encouraging step as Carrick attempts to rebuild confidence within the squad.
The United manager is under growing scrutiny, but has remained focused on improving his side ahead of the Chelsea fixture. Mainoo’s availability, even if only as a potential option from the bench, could provide a timely boost.
