Godzilla Minus Zero, a direct sequel to Godzilla Minus One, has made its world premiere at the 2026 New York Film Festival, returning to the same family two years after the events of the 2023 film.
The new film is set in 1949, as Japan continues to recover from the destruction caused in the first instalment before facing another threat.
Godzilla Minus Zero continues the Shikishima family story
Ryunosuke Kamiki reprises his role as Koichi Shikishima, while Minami Hamabe returns as Noriko Oishi. Motosuke Iida is also back as Akio Itagaki.
Masami Nagasawa joins the cast as weather forecaster Makoto Aoyama. Takashi Yamazaki, who directed Godzilla Minus One, returns to helm the sequel.
Although further plot details are being kept under wraps, the returning characters, setting and creative team make the connection between the two films clear. Watching Godzilla Minus One first is expected to give audiences a stronger understanding of the sequel’s characters and story.
The film festival describes Godzilla Minus Zero as continuing the post-war Japanese setting and human-focused storytelling of its predecessor, while promising larger-scale effects choreography and a new calamity for the Shikishima family.
When will Godzilla Minus Zero be released?
Godzilla Minus Zero is scheduled to open in Japan on 3 November 2026, followed by a North American theatrical release on 6 November.
