Halima Brewer, a Green activist who has expressed support for Hamas and compared Jewish Israelis to Nazis, has been elected to the party’s disciplinary committee.
Ms Brewer will investigate complaints against Green members and sit on panels hearing disciplinary cases after being chosen at the party’s annual conference in Brighton last weekend.
In social media posts, she said she had been “naive” to oppose Hamas and described violent resistance against Israel as the only option left to Palestinians.
“I used to oppose Hamas because I thought their strategy for freeing Palestine was counterproductive,” she wrote. “I have dropped that naive view and now think the only thing Palestinians have left is violent resistance against the bigger terrorist – the biggest of all now – Israel.”
The comments accompanied an image stating: “Hamas are not the terrorists. They’re the ones fighting against the terrorists.” In another post, Ms Brewer wrote that people were still expected to hate Hamas after “being shown exactly what it was that Hamas has been fighting”.
She has also shared images of Israeli territory covered by a Palestinian flag, alongside a post claiming: “There is no country called ‘Israel’. There is only Palestine, which is currently occupied by an army of international thieves and murderers.”
The disclosures come as Green leader Zack Polanski faces criticism over antisemitism within the party, following the passing of a “Zionism is Racism” motion at the Brighton conference.
The Campaign Against Antisemitism has reported the Greens to the equalities watchdog over the policy. Gideon Falter, the organisation’s head, said the motion was “racist and unlawful because it discriminates against Jews”.
He added: “Whether the Party believes itself to be above the law, or – by staggering incompetence – has not bothered to check the legal position, we will ensure that it faces the consequences of its actions.”
The Prime Minister described the motion’s approval as a “completely wrong decision” and “terrible judgment”. He said it effectively ruled out a two-state solution and called on the Green leadership to reverse it.
Attorney General Ellie Reeves has also written to Liam Shrivastava, the Green mayor of Lewisham, urging him to reject the motion in his capacity as a local MP.
A spokesperson for the Board of Deputies of British Jews said Ms Brewer’s reported comments endorsing terrorism were “deeply concerning” and should be considered by police.
The spokesperson said they appeared to provide further evidence that the Greens had become “an extremist party with a platform of anti-Jewish racism”.
Chris Philp, the shadow home secretary, said: “If true, these reports are another horrifying example of how deeply rooted antisemitism has become in the Green Party. That such views may be represented on the Party’s disciplinary committee is beyond ridiculous.”
A Green Party spokesperson said the posts “do not reflect the views or the value of the Green Party”.
“Where there are examples brought to our attention that do not fit in with the views of the Green Party, we look into them through our existing processes,” the spokesperson added.
