The Metro Green Line extension will open to passengers on 12 June 2027, officials have announced, linking Minneapolis with Eden Prairie through St Louis Park, Hopkins and Minnetonka.
The date was confirmed by Metro Transit on Saturday, 26 September 2026, after a public event at the Louisiana Avenue station in St Louis Park.
The 14.5-mile Southwest Light Rail project will add 16 stations to the existing Green Line, creating a direct rail connection from Eden Prairie to downtown Minneapolis and onwards to St Paul.
Construction began in November 2018 and the project has cost about $2.75 billion. Metro Transit said the work is now substantially complete, with testing under way ahead of the launch of passenger services.
The extension passes through a corridor that includes major employment and residential areas in the west metro. It will also connect with local bus services and existing transport links across the Minneapolis-St Paul region.
Metro Transit has been preparing for the opening by recruiting and training additional train operators, maintenance staff and communications workers. Proposed changes to connecting bus routes are also being developed for when the new service begins.
