A 45-year-old man has been charged with murdering his GP wife, Hannah Cain, after she was found dead at their home in Dersingham, near the Sandringham estate in Norfolk.
Mark Cain was arrested after police discovered the body of Dr Cain in the early hours of Sunday. He has been remanded in custody and is due to appear before Norwich Magistrates’ Court for an initial hearing.
Norfolk Police said the woman had been found at an address in Fern Hill. A Home Office post-mortem examination was carried out, but the cause of death remains pending further investigation.
Michael Devaney, a senior Crown Prosecutor, said: “The Crown Prosecution Service has decided to prosecute Mark Cain, 45, with the murder of Dr Hannah Cain.
“It follows an investigation by Norfolk Police at her home in Dersingham.”
Dr Cain was known professionally as Dr Hannah Terry and worked at Grimston Medical Centre, as well as for cosmetic treatments business Norfolk Sky Aesthetics.
She was understood to have worked with the Royal Family and to have treated senior members, including Queen Camilla. The King and Queen are understood to have been informed of her death.
Grimston Medical Centre, including its dispensary, was temporarily closed on Monday. A message from the practice said it was due to “extremely difficult circumstances affecting our practice team”.
The statement added: “We apologise for the disruption and appreciate your patience and understanding at what is a very difficult time for our colleagues.”
Dr Cain was said to have been hosting a children’s sleepover when she was found dead. Bouquets and tributes were left outside the property as forensic teams and police officers investigated.
Residents described Dersingham as a peaceful community and said they had been shocked by the death. One resident said Dr Cain had lived in the area for about ten years and was “just a lovely human being with three gorgeous young children”.
A neighbour in his 90s said the family’s two boys and younger girl were “lovely”, recalling how they would sometimes ask to search his garden for a football.
Another resident said: “Dersingham might not have a centre but it’s got a heart.”
Norfolk Police said specialist officers were supporting Dr Cain’s family, who had asked for privacy at the difficult time.
