Jane and Shane will face the test of their own high standards when they host their instant restaurant on My Kitchen Rules, with one team set to leave the competition after Monday night’s episode.
The New South Wales pair have been among the most outspoken contestants at the table, describing rival dishes as “ugly”, “run of the mill” and “one dimensional”. Shane is confident they can match their criticism with a strong performance, saying: “We’re gonna just smash it out of the park.”
But their menu will be closely watched by the other teams, several of whom have questioned Jane’s blunt approach to judging their food.
A confronting pigeon dish and an egg course containing a stomach-turning surprise are expected to create tension during the meal, leaving the contestants to decide whether Jane and Shane’s food can withstand the scrutiny.
Jane and Shane face criticism from fellow contestants
Alisha and Deanne, whose own instant restaurant was criticised by Jane and Shane, are hoping their rivals fail to meet expectations.
“I would love for Jane and Shane to really just flop,” Alisha said.
The South Australian mothers have accused the pair of acting like “snobs” after Jane delivered a harsh assessment of their colourful and quirky dishes.
“Jane and Shane have definitely made us feel like we have nothing to bring to the table,” Alisha said. “Is there a target on their back from us? Possibly.”
Tiffany and Giancarlo, a Victorian couple who have been together for nearly two decades, also said Jane’s passion for food was evident but questioned the way she expressed her views.
“But I think it’s just the way that Jane’s opinion comes across, I just don’t think that it’s very measured,” Tiffany said.
“I think she just needs to consider how she’s making people feel when she speaks to them in the tone that she does.”
Krysten and Lucy, a mother-and-daughter team from Queensland, have likewise criticised Jane and Shane for making harsh comments about contestants behind their backs rather than confronting them directly.
Krysten said Jane’s experience as a food stylist, including having worked with judge Colin Fassnidge in the past, meant there was considerable pressure on the pair to deliver.
“They have really talked up their abilities. Tonight is their night to show us what they can really do,” she said.
Fassnidge has acknowledged that Jane and Shane have “upset a lot of people around the table”. Their cooking will now determine whether they can silence their critics or become vulnerable to elimination.
One team will be eliminated after Monday night’s episode. Jane and Shane will be competing against Alisha and Deanne, who currently sit at the bottom of the scoreboard.
My Kitchen Rules returns Monday at 7.30pm on Seven and 7plus.
