John Goodman showcased his 200lb weight loss as he attended the Los Angeles premiere of his new film, Digger, with his wife Anna Beth.
The 74-year-old actor posed alongside Anna Beth, 57, on the red carpet, with the couple displaying their affection before the screening. Goodman wore a navy suit with a striped shirt and tie, while his wife chose a flowing maroon dress and matching slingback heels.
Goodman plays the President of the United States in Digger, a dark satirical comedy-drama directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu, whose previous films include Birdman, The Revenant and Babel.
Tom Cruise stars as Digger Rockwell, an eccentric oil magnate whose actions help trigger a catastrophic environmental disaster before he attempts to persuade the world that he can save humanity.
Goodman became widely known for playing family patriarch Dan Conner in the US sitcom Roseanne. His size was occasionally incorporated into the programme, and he later revealed that he had weighed 400lb at his heaviest.
John Goodman’s weight-loss journey
The actor’s weight-loss journey began after he entered rehabilitation in 2007 and stopped drinking, following decades of alcohol addiction during which he said he would drink on set.
“It was 30 years of a disease that was taking its toll on everyone around me and it had got to the point where, every time I did it, it was becoming more and more debilitating. It was life or death,” he told The Guardian five years later. “It was time to stop.”
By 2010, Goodman had lost 100lb after cutting sugar from his diet and exercising six days a week with trainer Mackie Shilstone, who had also worked with Serena Williams.
Shilstone placed him on a Mediterranean-style eating plan and encouraged him to walk between 10,000 and 12,000 steps a day, using a treadmill and an elliptical machine. Goodman has also credited portion control with helping him maintain his slimmer frame.
By 2023, he said he had lost more than 200lb. His later exercise routine was largely based around walking his dogs after the Covid-19 pandemic brought his boxing regime to an end.
Goodman has several other projects in development, including the podcast drama Hindsight: The Day Before, in which he plays Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes. His upcoming films include The Hollywood Hitman, in which he plays himself, and the horror film Skeletons, starring Brie Larson and Willa Fitzgerald.
