Nearly three decades after Ken Kesey led a legendary counter-culture road trip across the United States, the writer returned to the road aboard a replica of his psychedelic school bus.
Kesey, who was then living as a farmer in Oregon, travelled with members of his Merry Pranksters, both young and old. The journey was accompanied by “Sunday Morning” correspondent Bill Geist.
The Merry Pranksters’ cross-country road trip
The original expedition took place in 1964, when Kesey and his group set out across the country in the brightly associated school bus, establishing a lasting connection between the writer and the era’s counter-culture.
The later trip revisited that story using a replica of the iconic bus, bringing Kesey back together with fellow Merry Pranksters for a journey that was broadcast on November 18, 1990.
