Richmond has targeted high selections in this year’s AFL draft to strengthen its list before Tasmania’s arrival creates a “significantly compromised” 2027 draft.
The Tigers secured pick five from Port Adelaide and now hold selections two, five, 44 and 81 for the draft on November 19.
Blair Hartley, Richmond’s football talent executive general manager, said the club had deliberately prioritised this year’s draft because of the changes expected when the Tasmania Devils enter the competition.
“To have the opportunity to pick two players at the very front end of this year’s draft is exciting for us and gives us a chance to further bolster the talent on our list before Tasmania’s concessions take over next year,” Hartley said.
“The 2027 draft is set to be significantly compromised, so it made strategic sense for us to take this approach.”
Tasmania’s concessions will include picks one, three, five, seven, nine, 11 and 13, along with the first selection in every subsequent round. Picks five, seven, 11 and 13 must be traded to other clubs.
