Real Madrid defender Raul Asencio was the subject of summer interest from Liverpool and Chelsea, according to a report by Marca, but opted to remain at the Spanish club.
Asencio has yet to feature for Real Madrid this season. However, circumstances in the squad could now lead to his first appearance, with Dean Huijsen suspended after being sent off in the Madrid derby and Ibrahima Konate injured while on international duty with France.
The academy graduate is consequently expected to come into contention alongside Antonio Rudiger at centre-back for Jose Mourinho’s side. Real Madrid have significant fixtures approaching, meaning Asencio could be introduced in demanding circumstances.
Raul Asencio chose to stay at Real Madrid
Marca reports that Asencio had offers from Liverpool, Chelsea and clubs in Turkey during the summer transfer window. Accepting one of those proposals would have taken him away from the club where he developed.
Instead, the defender remained patient and stayed in Madrid. His decision could now bring an opportunity sooner than expected, although his longer-term future at Real Madrid remains uncertain.
Asencio has continued to provide cover when required, and the current defensive absences may give him another chance to establish himself. The opportunity follows a difficult summer that included a conviction for drink-driving.
