Manchester United’s dispute with academy prospect JJ Gabriel has intensified after his representatives reportedly set conditions for scholarship talks, including a demand for at least 20 minutes of first-team football in three matches.
The 15-year-old has not trained with United since leaving the club before the Carabao Cup tie against Brighton on 16 September. The stand-off has now become increasingly public, with no immediate resolution in sight.
JJ Gabriel dispute centres on first-team opportunities
Gabriel’s representatives are said to have told United that he should play a minimum of 20 minutes against Sabah FK, Brighton and Bournemouth before discussions over a scholarship agreement could begin.
His camp also reportedly believe that promises made by the club have not been honoured. Gabriel was understood to have been in line for a senior debut against Brighton before the dispute escalated and his representatives asked United to cancel his registration.
The Sabah FK fixture presented an immediate obstacle, as Gabriel had not been included in United’s UEFA squad and was therefore unable to play in that match.
Gabriel turns 16 today, making him eligible to sign a scholarship agreement. However, he remains registered with United despite reports that he is still expected to leave.
Real Madrid, Barcelona and Bayern Munich have all been linked with the highly rated teenager, who is regarded as one of the brightest talents in United’s academy.
The situation leaves United needing to balance their desire to retain Gabriel with the need for first-team opportunities to be determined by the coaching staff. Guaranteed senior minutes as a condition of remaining at the club would risk creating a difficult precedent for other academy players.
A resolution would require both sides to reset their expectations, but the continuing absence of Gabriel from training suggests that an agreement remains some way off.
