A Mansfield Fire Department engine was struck by a vehicle while shielding emergency crews at the scene of an earlier collision on southbound State Highway 360 in Texas early on Sunday, October 4.
The crash happened at about 1.30am, when Engine 5 had been deliberately positioned to block traffic and protect firefighters working to clear the first wreck.
Three crew members were inside the fire engine when it was hit. They were wearing seat belts and reported no injuries. The driver of the vehicle involved was taken to hospital in a stable condition, according to Mansfield Fire Department. After the collision, the firefighters left the engine and helped the driver of the car that had struck it, the department said.
Mansfield Fire Department said emergency vehicles are placed in blocking positions to give responders room to work and reduce the risk of further collisions. It urged motorists approaching roadside incidents to slow down, move over where it is safe, avoid distractions and follow instructions from emergency personnel.
