Michigan State Police made 104 traffic stops during a targeted crackdown on three Metro Detroit freeways, issuing 62 tickets and recording a top speed of 98mph.
The operation was carried out on Tuesday, 20 October, between 11am and 4pm by troopers from the Metro South Post and motor carrier officers. It covered stretches of I-75 between Taylor and Woodhaven, I-96 from Redford to Livonia, and I-275 in Romulus.
Police said 44 drivers received verbal warnings, while two arrests were made. Officers also recorded 16 speeding violations, 12 hands-free violations and four offences for following too closely.
No crashes were reported in the areas targeted during the enforcement operation.
Michigan State Police said the initiative was intended to prevent collisions by tackling dangerous driving before incidents occurred, rather than simply responding after crashes had taken place.
“We aren’t just responding to crashes. We’re proactively working to prevent them,” the force’s Second District said in a statement.
It added that similar traffic enforcement operations would be carried out on Michigan’s state highways in the future.
