The Milwaukee Brewers survived a tense finish to beat the San Diego Padres 3-2 in Game 1 of the National League Division Series at American Family Field.
The victory gave the Brewers an early advantage in their first-ever postseason meeting with San Diego, after Milwaukee had entered October as the National League’s top seed following a franchise-record 103-win regular season.
The Padres made the stronger start, moving 2-0 ahead in the second inning through run-scoring hits from Luis Campusano and Jake Cronenworth. Milwaukee responded in the third when Jackson Chourio launched a two-run home run to level the contest.
William Contreras then put the Brewers in front in the seventh, sending a solo drive over the wall against Adrian Morejon. Jake Bauers contributed two hits as Milwaukee’s offence did enough to secure a narrow lead.
Jacob Misiorowski allowed two earned runs in four innings, giving up four hits and a walk while striking out four. Antonio Senzatela, Aaron Ashby, Abner Uribe, DL Hall and Trevor Megill combined to shut out San Diego over the remaining five innings.
Hall was credited with the win, while Megill earned the save after navigating a nervy ninth inning. The Padres finished with 11 runners left on base.
Brewers hold on after roof drama
San Diego appeared to have a chance to threaten again when Ty France sent a drive high towards left field. The ball struck one of the wires supporting the closed roof at American Family Field before dropping into Chourio’s glove.
The on-field decision was reviewed and upheld, leaving the Padres with two outs in the inning. Megill then completed the win to send Milwaukee 1-0 ahead in the best-of-five series.
Game 2 is scheduled for Sunday, October 4, with first pitch at 3pm local time in Milwaukee.
