Netflix has released the trailer for The Body, an eight-part teen horror series created by Quinn Shephard, in which a disastrous dance-team initiation leads to prophetic visions and hysteria in a Catholic school community.
The series follows a group of badly behaved Catholic schoolgirls after the initiation goes wrong. As they begin experiencing visions of events yet to come, tensions rise and the town is swept up in mass panic.
The Body cast and story
The cast includes Kristina Bogic, Sara Boustany, Sofia Wylie, Geena Meszaros, Shirley Chen and Gabby Windey.
Shephard, who also wrote and directed the Emmy-nominated mystery series Under the Bridge, said the cast had made an immediate impression during auditions.
“With all the girls, I think there was something immediately special about them from their first audition tapes,” she said. “We were so blessed with the most wonderful cast. I love them, I feel like they’re all my children, my coven.”
Shephard also highlighted Bogic’s preparation for the role, saying: “This was Kristina’s first time doing an American accent, and she had such an unbelievable transformation, even just in the prep for this, doing her hair, learning her accent.”
The creator has described The Body as a playful take on her own nightmarish teenage experiences, combining teen drama, comedy and Catholic horror. She said the series was made for her younger self and called its tone “gritty camp”.
The show draws on Shephard’s fondness for 1990s and Y2K teen films and erotic thrillers, with influences including Carrie, Jennifer’s Body, Heavenly Creatures and Mean Girls. She also cited Arthur Miller’s play The Crucible as a major inspiration.
All eight episodes of The Body will be released on Netflix on November 11.
