Family and friends have farewelled Perth father Paul Dougan at a funeral in Fremantle, weeks after he allegedly suffered a fatal assault while on holiday in Bali.
Mr Dougan, from Gosnells, died in a Balinese hospital in August after being attacked at the One Tribe One Life Lounge and Cafe in Kuta. His funeral was held at Fremantle Cemetery on Wednesday.
Indonesian police are investigating the deaths of the 56-year-old and the alleged assault, which they say involved four Australian men. Investigators have said the men left Indonesia the day after the incident.
Police allege the confrontation began when one of the men struck a woman at the venue and Mr Dougan intervened. Officers are examining witness accounts and CCTV footage as they work to establish the precise sequence of events and each person’s role.
Mr Dougan’s family previously said he sustained severe internal injuries and underwent several operations, including surgery to remove his spleen, before his death.
His son Liam paid tribute to him after he died, writing that he would “love and remember” his father for the rest of his life.
The Gosnells Football Club described Mr Dougan as a much-loved father, grandfather and member of the wider community, adding that his death would be deeply felt by those who knew him.
Western Australian authorities have offered condolences to the family, while the Australian Federal Police are understood to be ready to assist Indonesian investigators. The British High Commission is also supporting the family, as Mr Dougan was a British national.
