Two men in Charlotte, North Carolina, were stopped by police after they were spotted travelling along a public road on a sofa balanced across two electric scooters.
Officers from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) encountered the unusual vehicle on South Tryon Street during the weekend. A photograph shared by the department showed a small two-seater sofa straddling two Lime scooters, with one man apparently riding each side.
The stop was carried out by CMPD’s Entertainment District Unit, which posted about the incident on social media on Thursday, 1 October.
“While we appreciate the creativity, we do have to remind everyone: no matter what you’re ‘driving’ (using that term extremely loosely), please think about safety first,” the department said.
Police questioned whether such a contraption belonged on a road shared with cars, warning that the sight of it could distract other drivers and create an unsafe situation.
“Ask yourself: Should this be on a road… with actual cars… will the sheer shock of seeing this on the road cause other drivers to lose focus and drive unsafely?” CMPD said. “If the answer feels even slightly like ‘yes’, maybe rethink the ride.”
The department did not say whether either man was issued with a ticket or whether the pair were licensed to use the scooters. It also did not provide further details about what happened to the sofa after the stop.
